How-To Pumpkin

The Pumpkin process allows an artist to practice basic techniques while trying out new patters.  Also the larger pumpkins are a great way to work out.

Step 1. Get yourself some glass!
Every artist needs some materials to work with and glassblowing is no different. Gather Glass is somewhat like spooning honey. Take a long pipe, dip it in, and give it a spin.

Step 2. Give it some shape.
Using the combination of gravity, wood, metal, and the air from my lungs, the blob of glass is shaped to be inserted into the mold.  The mold adds those wonderful grooves, giving the shape a distinct pumpkin like look.
Optic Molds are used to give even ridges.

Step 3. Pumpkin head.
The steps above give you the body of the pumpkin.  Variations to the steps depend on pattern and colors on the pumpkins wich are applied through various methods.

Step 4. Final touches.
Adding the pumpkin top also varies in technique and style.  The primary technique used in this case is off-the-pipe, where the pumpkin body is created, knocked-off and set aside while another pipe is used to gather more glass to be dropped on and shaped for the curlycue seen on the pumpkins available.
The new glass is wound around a pipe to make curlycues.
